from the saturday tbc guy
general
-kick range is just outside the jab
-so if you throw a punch and they back away one step, they will be in range for a kick. most of the partner drills today practiced this
- more impact on the kick if leg is extended (partner julian said it felt more like a push kick if i kicked from too close)
-the right kick is the longest range weapon because your base is on your lead left leg and you're coming forward
jab rear kick
-he didn't teach this today but he mentioned it because he will teach jab-switchkick next week
-he said in practice, this is a slow combo
-what is usually done is jab-switchkick
step vs pivot
-because i asked him after class
-what he prefers is step, but he does something between a step and pivot
-i didn't understand the rationale completely but it looked there was more precision in where the kick will land if you step.
-he says the pivot is used a lot in dutch kickboxing. it looked like it was less predictable on where it would land and where the greatest impact would be when he pivoted
some warm up drills
-you walk forward alternating left and right legs going straight up except you turn your hips forward
-you walk forward alternating left and right knees except they are long, round knees that are like kicks
blocking high body kick
-turn to the kick
-use the blade side of the forearm (like the edge you would do a plank on)
-you flare your elbows out to create a frame away from you (not close like a close guard)
-if it's not framed out, your arms will smack you in the face (no frame will result in them scoring a point, but a frame would not get them a point)
-you block with both forearms, not just one
-you block with the bottom part towards the elbows
combos we did today
-1, they step back, you rear kick (and they block rear kick with frame)
-1-2-hook, they step back, you rear kick (and they block rear kick with frame)
-1-2, they step back, you rear kick (and they block rear kick with frame)
***after the 2, you leave it out there, then you step out with your left foot and dracula pump the right arm across your face, then rear kick since youre now loaded for it
heavy bag drill for 1-2, rear kick: 2, rear kick, rear kick
-the point is to show that you're loaded after the 2
-throw the 2, step out, make sure your hips and shoulders are turned over. you should feel loaded for the right kicks
-after the first right kick, you lower your right leg down but in a way that you don't move your hips and shoulders out of the loaded position.
-we actually started by throwing multiple right kicks instead of only 2. cuz you're actually loaded and can keep throwing right kicks

horizontal elbows
from tbc chuy the other day or week
the technique
-non elbow hand is palm on forehead
-a lil hip twist then the shoulder, elbow does the rest. slices open. you just do your elbow to the other side of their face. you don't rotate the whole body.
-turn your palm out, wrist is by armpit
-for rt elbow: hip twist at beginning like throwing a right hand
-for lt elbow: a step up and down on left to get gravity behind elbow
elbow defense
-basically you stuff their elbow at the beginning then clinch their head
-your forearm smashes their forearm in on the same side
-the smashing arm then grabs around for plum clinch
-the other hand on non elbow side does the palm on forehead thing
elbow drill
-tap the hand and that's what

boxing
by the older guy and undisputed
6 punches
-straights
*****turn punches over
-hooks
*****elbow at the same level as fist
-uppers
*****thrust your hips forward
drills on bag
-straights
*****2 straights, pause, 4 straights (standing in place)
*****2 straights, move to a different spot, 4 straights, move to a different spot
*****2 straights, jab while moving to right, 4 straights, jab while moving to left. repeat.
-hooks
*****2 hooks, pause, 4 hooks
-uppercut
*****2 ups, pause, 4 ups
block straight punches
-to face
****parry/push inward
****if punch comes on right side (their left), you push with your right hand
****if punch comes on left side (their right), you push with your left hand
****you scoop them in to make them lose balance
****small movements, your hand doesnt move far away from your face
-to body
****same thing as face but your parrying with inner edge of your elbow/forearm
****parry with elbow forearem because if you do it with your wrist/hand you might hit yourself or have your arms pinned to you or whatever
the turtle shell
-hands together. makes a v.
-2 places: either below eyes or over eyes (like eyebrows)
*****if below eyes, you can see them
*****if horns, you can only see your feet. look at feet. but don't look straight down
-keep hands together or they can punch through it
-elbows in and together
-crunch elbows to hips
-rotate side to side
-step back
kicks: horizontal and diagnoal
by jesie
diagnoal kick
-if body is open (elbows out)
-prone to elbows to shin contact if elbows are in. ouch.
horizontal kick
-"breaking the shell" (i think. cuz this written long after the class).
-if elbows are tucked in protecting their body
multiple kicks
-don't bring your kicking leg all the way back to normal fight stance cuz it's too slow
catching a kick and dumping them
-step inside, turn your outside shoulder inside, lift up, put your free hand on knee, and dump them forward
-you can take 2 steps forward max or it's called plowing, which is illegal in muay thai rules
-it's like an ankle lock grip
-it's like a reverse 1/x (the graph) motion
-so for example if he uses his right leg to kick my left side: my left hand catches, i step to the right, i rotate my body to the right after i catch, and i push him with left hand on his knee
-note: you turn your body if they do a diagonal kick without much body turn. cuz you need to turn them to get them unbalanced and to where they can't hit you.
-BUT: if they did a horizontal kick and they turned their hips over good, then you don't need to turn your body. because they are already turned. turning your body would just make dumping them harder because of the leverage.

kicks and knees
by erik the saturday guy
leg checks
-he had us warming up doing checks on each side
-your guard stays up, and your knee comes up
-he said you can lower your elbows/guard if you need to for blocking a little bit lower, but don't crunch your body down or your head can get kicked
throwing the right hand
-you should rotate to the point that your shoulder comes up to protect your chin
-you don't shrug your shoulder up
-the proper motion will raise your shoulders into the correct position
throwing the right kick
-the rotation motion is the same as throwing a right cross
-i needed to actually step out to make the correct angle and it felt better
-you lose power if you lean back on the kicks
switch kick
-switch should be short
-something about it can be a long switch but you have to be farther away
-(i'm writing this way after it happened so not remembering it all)
-i think if you switch too long you'll be too close or you'll have to lean back or something
-you don't want to lean back when you kick. he gave reasons but i don't remember.
the drill he had us do
-was throwing right hand, right kick
-left hand, left kick
-i think the point was that it should feel like the same motion
multiple speed kicks
-use your hands to pump so you dont have to use your (legs? body?) as much
knees
-if they pressure their way into you
-you bring the kneeing arm up and then down to your waist
-the reason is not because you need to pull them in. (but u can). it's to protect your face from strikes.
-so if i'm doing a right knee and they're pressuring forward into me: parry with left hand (maybe step back with left foot too) >> bring right hand up and right foot back >> right knee
-he said throwing the knee is the same motion as throwing a kick

rear leg kick
by marvin
3 types
-upward
-horizontal
-downward
setups for the 3 types
-the loading setup is complementary to the trajectory of the kick
-jab > upward
-hook > horizontal
-lead uppercut > downward
upward
-fastest
-quickest to recover back to fighting stance
-least powerful
downward
-the opposite of above
horizontal
-in between up/down

teep
by marvin
when ao8 was in that transition before becoming tbc
teep
-rechamber the teep unless you're stepping forward with it on purpose
-the front teep is shorter range than rear teep because base is the rear foot
-the rear teep is longer range because the base becomes the front foot
countering the teep
-there's the swipe like kru mark taught and the catch
swipe
-that's not the actual name i just dont know what to call it
-only swipe from the elbow down; keep your guard up
-you swipe with the diagonal hand. so your left hand would swipe their left foot. wouldn't matter if they did a lead or rear teep.
-you swipe and always lead their leg across their body
following up after the swipe
-whatever side your loaded on you follow up with a punch or a kick. so if i swipe with my right hand, to my right side, i follow up with a cross or a right kick
catch
-you catch like a football, one hand on top and one on bottom
-then you toss his leg across his body
-then you follow up like you did with the swipe

right cross
coach chuck reminded me the other week to push off the ground with the right foot
it does feel stronger and more solid that way

Tips from James over the holidays
YOU HAVE THEM AGAINST THE ROPES
- or even not against the ropes
-dont let the reach out, frame you
-or if they just reach out to punch
-you trap their arm with 1 or 2 arms and your body weight
-this worked great even just moving around, not against the wall, ropes, whatever
DONT COVER UP AND PLANT YOUR FEET WHEN DEFENDING
- make sure you can see
-piviot out. Pivot swinging back leg out. Getting front leg involves is unnecessary and takes up energy.
MIX OFFENSE AND DEFENSE
-i think this is for the toe to toe exchanges
-dont be all defense or all offense
-think defense while throwing some offense
