they shell up or stand in place doing head movement

just some ideas from various things i've seen in various places

if they shell up to protect their face, you have some options

1. trap hand, peel, and punck/elbow/knee

2. body kick or low kick

3. angle off to the side (marvin cook vid)

if they stand in place to do head movement

*i already had the idea to hit body or kick legs but i wasn't executing because i think 1. i was too far away or 2. off balance

*per marvin cook vid, trying to punch head while they are standing in place doing head movement is a stupid game. its stupid for him because what he needs to do is move his hip/entire body away from you. otherwise, it's just a target. its stupid for you if you keep trying to chase his head because he's able to defend from that specific distance.

*what you need to do is take a step or half-step in, then punch either to head or body

Tip from Daniel yesterday

About cross blocking to clinch

Instead of doing regular leg checks and fighting at long range,
I can do cross check and step forward into clinch.

So good.

Some good combos

From freestyle pad work in chucks class. Tall white guy w beard.

*r kick, h, 2, l kick

*l kick, 2, h, r kick

*1, r knee, l elbow

*2, l knee, r elbow

*1, 2, slip to right, r upper,  h, 2

______

* chuck said I was turning my lead foot inward when throwing the 2. Obviously not good mechanics. Should be facing forward or out.

*dont swing pad when holding for hook. Just hold it by face.

evading the right hand

per chuck last week

the way we practiced it was off defending his 1,2.  we parried the 1.

then for the 2 we either

- step diagonally backright 45 degrees

- step straight back (if cant do 45)

-slip to the left side

some stuff from kru mark

over many classes, stuff i hadn't written down yet

combo
R up elb (or straight elb), L inside kick, R low kick
he was also saying that if you do the inside kick a lot, they may step out, in which case your good angle for R low kick. oh i think this was a counter to a 1,2. they might step out with the 2 if you keep doing the inside kick.

from that one on one:

how he had me training kicks
knee up and then my leg was horizontal, parallel to the ground
he said this was the way he trained to kick the bricks or whatever on his birthday video

combo on the heavy bag i will like
1,2, L elb, L backhandclear, R elb, R backhandclear, grab bag, R knee, L knee

using the double end bag
-work on turning shoulders more and head movement
-not hard punches, not fully extended punches
-just stay close, turn your shoulders, short punches, elbows, head movement

using that thing for the hooks, punches, and knees
-not power shots
-work on speed, retraction, and keeping elbows in

Adjusting for kicks

Per Chuck yesterday

When holding thai pads
You step back to give them room to kick so they're not so crowded

If you're the kicker
- if padholder doesn't step back, you'll be crowded. Instead of stepping forward, you'd step to the side in the direction your pivot foot is pointing. So for right kick, you'd step out to left. For left kick, step out laterally to the right.
- if padholder doesn't step back, you wouldn't step forward cuz wouldn't have room to kick but you'd have room to knee or elbow

straight elbow vs hook or boxing guard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7J1dmnnabQ
Muay Thai Using the Straight / Spear Elbow Tutorial

on the hooking side you put up your hands to comb hair (straight or spear elbow)
-you either step in with elbow as he throws hook
-or you can catch/block and then step in with elbow

or if you see boxing guard
-step in with straight or spear elbow

defending the roundhouse kick

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rlz-Oov57to
Muay Thai Different ways to Defend Roundhouse Kick Tutorial

1. block
-make sure elbow to knee, either inside or outside

2. cross block
-also elbow to knee
-more destructive to kicker than regular block

3. teep

4. catch

lots of punches workout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4efWEC9ozTc
JT's Punchout Workout | 1100 punches | It will be easy

he reccomends it as an end-of-workout punchout

some main ideas of it

-12slip, 21slip
-12roll, 21roll

the workout
10 supersets of the following:

-12 x10
-l up, r up x10
-hook, r hook x10
-12slip, 21slip x10
-12roll, 21roll x10
-"shoeshine" (10 uppercuts?)

different angles of kicks

from some video i watched a while ago but couldn't find again

low kick can be
1. downward chop
2. 45 angle up

kick to body
1. 45 degree up
2. straight through / horizontal

kick to head
-goes over their shoulder then chops down (like swinging leg over the fence motion we did in class)

man, if i had known this from the beginning i wouldn't have struggled so much in class

using lead leg for defense/counters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVdZEQ2YQFw
Muay Thai 5 Essential Counters using the Lead leg Tutorial

1. left kick when he steps in from out of range into range
-it's an inside leg kick
-kick might not deter him so you need to follow up, like with a right kick

2. left kick to the body when he steps in from out of range with a left or right punch
-if he jabs, it's a kick to his torso (cuz the way he's turned if proper form)
-if he throws a cross, it's a kick to the side/back ribs
-he leans back w kick to a) generate power and b) get out of range of punch

3. left high kick when he steps in from out of range with jab or cross
-if he jabs, the kick would disable his cross cuz its landing across his arm as its by his face
-also lean back as in #2 above (kick to body)

4. teep to the thigh if he tries to roundhouse kick you
-note: there was another vid that says to do a lead teep to whichever leg he tries to kick with

5. teep to stomach if he tries to roundhouse kick or punch you

seems like its basically left kick if he's out of range, teep if he's in range

i want to try to teep more as a counter to kicks and punches

hand trapping

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnaBMtw-vvw
"Hand-Trapping: Creating Angles & Openings in MMA"

i like this. i need to incorporate this into my game asap.

1. from long guard, just put your hands on top of theirs, and come in close with an elbow
-or can follow up with kicks

2. they do boxing shell guard
*step in and control the wrists from the outsides. several options.
---pivot to rt
*******rt elbow
*******knees
*******body shots
---flying knee to body
*step in and control the triceps
---pivot to rt
*dutch trap: step in and opposite hand pulls opposite shell hand down
---follow up with right hook (if you grabbed with left hand)
********if they pull hnad back up >> right hook to body
********saw another video on long guard where instead of hook, follow up with side elbow

some fakes that i can incorporate right away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX4GNEQvoZE
"6 of my favourite "FAKES" to strengthen your striking game (Real Time Sparring Footage)"

1. fake push kick
-you try to get them to lower hands to brush your teep
-hop fwd to left hook, follow up with right low kick

2. fake right kick
-you try to get them to lead leg check
-step fwd with right and throw a right hook, follow up with left high kick
-OR MY IDEAS
**fake right kick  >> rt cross/overhand >> lt hook/elbow
**fake right kick >> tyson combo: step fwd rt hook to body, left neck grab, right uppercut
see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YPa6pGPL6E   "Mike Tyson Combo in Peekaboo #004a: right hook to the body - right uppercut to the head"
**fake right kick >> tyson combo: step fwd rt hook to body, left hook to head
see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k18nmyD8UHQ   "Mike Tyson- Right hook body-Left Hook head"

3. fake a right cross
-you try to get them to put their hands up to defend head
-throw a right kick

4. fake anything (against a counterfighter)
-you take a small step and fake an attack to get them to (counter)attack
-you anticipate this and counter their counter

some clinch stuff from daniel the other day

basically be aware of elbows

-so when pummeling, you control the elbow from the outside before snaking it in

-if there arm is over yours, you raise your elbow to keep connection with them so they can't elbow you

-not r/t elbows: there's the face push and also the x-push

some other ideas from various videos

-clinch coming in from frame / long guard / blocks

-clinch coming in with a fake teep where you lift knee up and then hop in and clinch

-clinching with an overhook (like my overhook guard from bjj)

-clinching with arm triangle

-for full plum, squeeze your elbows together and make sure your elbows/forearms are on his chest so he can't close the distance on you for takedown or to go hip to hip

-if they have one arm on your neck, you can do
*"wax off" to clear it.
*or do "wax off" to grab their neck.
*or do "wax off" to push their chest. I personally wouldnt bench them maybe arm to chest and step away
*or another one that's my idea is you can "wax off" to overhook clinch control

-if they do push face defense, you can pop their arm up and over and get arm triangle control

-for plum
*have hands overlapped and maybe wrists crossed over
*using head as a third appendage is very helpful
*push your elbows into their chest

-come in from long blocking / framing to double bicep control to knee

-if your arms are over theirs, you can throw elbows

-if their arms are over yours grabbing your neck
*you can comb your hair to break their grip
*you can squeeze your hand in just enough to get inside bicep control

-if you have outside bicep control, you can throw side elbow

-when you have plum and you pivot, you pull them down not horizontal

-if they reach one arm to grab in, you can get outside elbow control and do an  up elbow on the free side

frame (long guard?) defense

from tristar youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNbkEJPZ3LA
muay thai frame defense

i think this type of long guard makes more sense to me and what i'll rely on most.
of course, like mmmatt says, i think i'll mix up my defense styles though so the opponent doesn't figure out my defense.

this guard is good for hooks, overhands, uppercuts, elbows, and knees

he says the tight boxing guard defense (what i use the most) is ok but doesn't protect you from elbows and knees. the frame defense allows you to block them at a distance.

the way he does it is the lead hand (left hand) always extends straight
-shoves his punching shoulder
-point your elbow up (protects punches higher than chin)

what changes is what your right hand/arm does

-a punch to my left side: right hand goes over my left eyebrow

-a punch to my right side: basic comb your hair catch on the right temple/ear

-an uppercut: bring arm in close to body and let him uppercut your elbow

using the head

head is the 9th weapon (in addition to the 8 limbs). more muay boran / self defense.

to headbutt
-lower your head and ram your forehead into their nose
-you don't cock your head back like a pro wrestler

to block straight punches
-lower your head and let them hit the top of the forehead
-it was hurting my hands jabbing spiderman boxer's head. in a streetfight, i think this is a destruction defense because they would probably hurt their hands if they tried to hit your head hard

teep, knees, and combos he wants me to work tonight

teep
-hitting with whole foot or ball of foot is ok
-he likes to hit with ball but then push away like stepping on gas pedal
-drill on the heavy bag is one explosive kick with pauses between reps. i think he said quick like a jab or maybe he said quickly like they're about to jab you then you kick

knees
-thrust hips forward like so that you thrust hips then the knee follows a little but then you'd have to raise the knee a little more for it to be a knee
-point your toes
-steering wheel toward the knee
-keep your chin down

combos for tonight
these combos are to mix up the game
ie, you do the 1,2 then he starts to think 12 so then you do 1,kick cuz he expected punches to head, then when he thinks you might kick he blocks so you add the 2 to the head cuz he's focused on leg kick
1. 1, 2
2. 1, right kick
3. 1, right kick but he blocks, 2 (as your leg comes down)

a lot of cool stuff from julian (bob marley) yesterday

# 1 - 6

1. they jab, right hook. >> you straight elbow, then use the same elbow hand to downward scoop, step in and grab the neck (at the same time), pull the neck like a steering wheel, knee them in the gut
-#6 is based off number 1

2. they jab, right hook >> you straight elbow, then

DEALING WITH GETTING CLINCHED
-there are 3 phases:
1. preventing before they can tie up
2. dealing when tied up and pummeling but not full on clinch
3. they have secured the clinch

1. preventing clinch
-when he's reaching you guide arm out of the way
-if he's taller than you push up first and then guide arms out of the way
-it's like a 45 degree pivot
-you don't overextend your arms but you don't keep them super tight to your body either
-your pivot (in place) foot is the one on the side you'll step to, your step out foot rotates to the side you'll end up on
-your loaded for a knee or kick after pivoting out

2. pummelling
-turn like a steering wheel

3. secured clinch
-drop your center of gravity, get your hips close together, put your knee behind one of his, and twist him to trip over it
-epiphany about getting the hips close together, it's not about squeezing his back into you but more about moving your hips close to his
-just right now i'm thinking, if you drop your hips low, then your body can get under his and you can use that to kind of drive him up and unbalanced backward which would also make the bear hug squeezing him into you a lot easier as well as getting your hips closer to him
-don't back up because that make you vulnerable to knees. if you can see your feet, you can get kneed.

THE END GAME
is not to slug it out. it is to unbalance (and sweep?) your opponent.
in battlefield times, it was not about slugging it out, it was getting the guy on the ground, being able to stay aware of surroundings, and move on.

holding thai pads and lead kick and knee

kru mark

holding thai pads
-don't hold it down so low like i'm bending over. just keep it close to my body.
-turn a little to the side you want them to kick
-maybe throw a few punches before the desired combo for them to block
-the combo we did was 2 left body kicks. every once in a while add a right body kick to the front

kicks
-he said just kick from your stance, don't step fwd/out/whatever or you will telegraph. if you need to close the distance first, then step in with your stance to close the distance then throw from there

lead kicks
-he said it's important to get good and lead kick

knee
-i don't get it but youre supposed to drive your hip fwd so your knee is like a spear
-on the heavy bag, he just had me knee to the diagnoal side and step through / penetrate without hitting the bag

my kicks i see on video
-i need to work more on turning my hips over. most of my kicks looked like the kick equivalent of an "arm" punch

some good stuff from kru mark and others

kru mark

guard when tired or hands tired
-keep the elbows and upper arms resting on the front of my body with my guard up
-shrug shoulders
-i think its good and no one would suspect im too tired to keep my hands up

evading a knee to belly
-you twist your torso, maybe pivot too but not sure
-the outside hand reaches down only a little bit to parry it to the side. a cup motion. hand only about to solar plexus high

his long guard
-keeps you safe from all head punches
-he said it's a muay thai thing
-one hand combs the hair, the other kind of extends forward, elbows touch
-he said don't extend it all the way out. just kind of bent and palms forward. alternate sides since it doesn't matter which side they are punching from because it blocks all strikes. and keep coming forward a little bit each time and eventually you can clinch.

some video on you tube about sparring tips

a square muay thai stance
-is easier to kick both sides and block kick from both sides
-basically you keep your legs lined up with his
-to create an angle to kick, you just step laterally in either direction
-this is opposed to a boxing stance which is more "squeezed" together.

another vid about sparring tips. diff from above but make by same guy

-don't back up to avoid attacks. learn to block and immediately counterattack.
-if you move back it will take longer to attack because you have to come back in. also it will be easier for them to see it coming.

bald buff wing chun guy

elbows to block punches
-don't try to elbow his hands
-do put your elbow in front of your face
-the idea is he's aiming for your face, so that's where you put your elbow for protection

checking leg kicks
-toes point up
-keep your guard up because it is common for them to throw a punch at the same time or follow up with one

red shaggy guy

-if someone plums me, get my hands back in and plum them back. once you get control, start throwing a lot of knees

bob marley

some good warm up ideas
-alternating axe elbows
-knee up and out (like checking kick)
-kick in then knee up and out (hip motion for kick and check)

sparring

-been pivoting after throwing punches like duke from boxing works taught me and it's working good
-as far as remembering to keep hands up, just make sure they're in my periphery
-gotta remember to turn side to side with punches and kicks

some things from Kru Mark's classes

The 4 Ss (i don't know if there's an order)
1. Speed
2. Strength
3.Stamina
4. Skill
then there's some funny thing i don't remember about making a fist and Smile

Defending the teep
-He said we learn techniques using the hands to catch and toss the teep but in actual fighting you just rotate your torso
-Don't put both hands down to block the teep! When I watch myself on video, man, I leave my head open when I do that

Angle elbow to axe elbow
-parry jab, step in with angle elbow, follow up with axe
-the rear hand comes up to guard your forehead so the rear arm is in position to axe elbow

From sparring, dealing with straight punches
-against jab, i've been slipping and throwing overhand rights alot and its good
-against jab, i've also been swatting it down with right and continuing with a right and its good
-but today i swatted down a right cross with my right and threw a jab and it was good
